Since the close of the 2007 Savannah Sand Gnat's baseball season, Grayson Stadium has been going through a face lift. Being a baseball fan I am very excited, they are keeping the historic integrity of the field that was built in 1941, but adding modern amenities that both players and fans expect.
This offseason there has been much cosmetic surgery, the biggest project was just completed, a new playing surface. For you die hards, Opening Day is Friday April 11 and our first "thirsty Thursday" is April 17. So I look forward to seeing you in April and hopefully the season is a winning one, so we can enjoy September baseball in Savannah. See you at the park.
A New Field for New Dreams
(SAVANNAH, GA) Tifton Turf, of Tifton, Ga., has finished work on the new playing surface at Historic Grayson Stadium, thus finishing the first of the offseason renovations at the ballpark.
The field surface project started shortly after the season ended in September with the City of Savannah removing the old playing surface. In November, Tifton Turf came in to complete the rest of the project by installing a new irrigation and drainage system and rebuilding the field from the ground up.
The entire process took just under four months to complete. Funding for the new playing surface at Historic Grayson Stadium came from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), which was passed in 2006.
Next on the list of offseason improvements to Historic Grayson Stadium will be new light poles, which could be installed as early as the middle of February. Other improvements scheduled to take place include a new weight training and indoor batting cage facility, which is slated to go behind the left field foul pole. New offices to house the Sand Gnats front office staff are also scheduled to be started this offseason.
Savannah opens the home portion of its 2008 schedule on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. versus the Columbus Catfish. Season tickets and flex plan packages are currently available at the Sand Gnats offices. For more information, call 912-351-9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com.
