Over the past couple of weeks, things have become very exciting with opening of the new embarkation point on Savannah's River Street. Ferry service between Daufuskie Island and Savannah began in September of 2006, with the increase of visitors embarking from Savannah, it was a no brainer to open the Daufuskie Island Resort entity to provide a higher service for visitors to the island. Why a Savannah office? It allows visitors from the Savannah airport to board the ferry from River Street, instead of traveling additional 45 minutes to Hilton Head Island. It also gives visitors and residents of Melrose the opportunity to exercise day trips to Savannah.
The new office also gives me the chance to showcase Daufuskie Island, Savannah and other areas of the LowCountry and Creative Coast. We have been provided with large flat screen televisions that allow me to broadcast views of this part of the Southeast that I call home. I invite you to visit our office on the east end of River Street.
Historically, the Savannah to Daufuskie connection has deep roots that predate the Civil War. Planters and residents on Daufuskie relied on Savannah to provide provisions and contact to the rest of the country.
