Over the weekend, I was able to share an experience with some old friends and made some new ones while participating in the Savannah Boat Parade. Festivities began late in the afternoon, as the boat captains placed their Christmas decorations, visitors alike toured the Christmas expo on the Savannah River.
We soon launched to a rallying point, just east of the Westin Hotel on Hutchinson Island. People at the Westin cheered as the boats left the dock for the trip down river. Many of the boats were very festive with angels, trains, reindeer, snowmen, elves and Santa Claus. Each boat had a number, so the judges were able to vote for their favorite.
We were soon led by two tugboats as we raced past the Westin Hotel towards a point on the other side of the Talmedge Bridge. There we swung around and made the return trip back to the Westin. As we floated past River Street, thousands of spectators turned out to see the event. There was much Christmas spirit, no worries. Everybody was child that night, enjoying the evening and pondering their Christmas hopes and wishes.
As we tied up to Westin, many people were enjoying oysters and watching Georgia and Georgia Tech clash on the gridiron. It was just a great night for all in attendance. Fireworks then danced across the sky.
Wow, nice photos. Wish I could have been there but join us for the Beaufort version. I'll be in my kayak with DC battery powered lights wearing a red velvet fez and long white beard.
